Top Ten of 2018

30/12/2018 · by Joy

Well, this is it – tomorrow is the last day of 2018! It’s that weird time between Christmas and New Years when everyone is just sort of floating around, unsure where they are or what day it is… or maybe that’s just me, I don’t know. This year, I don’t want to write about the top ten new movies of 2018, though maybe a lot of this list will be comprised of new movies from this year… I want to go with the top ten movies I watched for the first time in 2018. There are some that just blew me away and have been sitting on a list of “to-watch”es for literally years and I want to acknowledge them! So, here goes nothing…

10. Don’t Talk to Irene (2017)

dont_talk_to_irene_still

I saw Don’t Talk to Irene at the North of Superior Film Association’s film festival this past April. I didn’t get a chance to see nearly as many films as I’d have liked to (as I work a lot and can’t necessarily dedicate an entire weekend to seeing films – unfortunately!) but I did manage to catch this one and, man, I enjoyed it. It was quirky, it was fun, and Geena Davis was Irene’s idol – what more can you ask for? While not without flaws, it is so much fun and you can’t help but fall in love with it and Irene.

9. Tully (2018)

charlize-theron-tully-1525456439

I did not expect to enjoy Tully as much as I did. I went in blind, and so should you. Apparently it was pretty controversial amongst, I don’t know, film sticklers and mommy bloggers. I thought it was really well done and… well, I can’t say much else without giving it all away. Give it a watch if you like movies that drop little hints and then blow the doors wide open.

8. The Endless (2017)

the-endless-aaron-moorhead-justin-benson

Here’s another one I went into totally blind and kind of left with only partial vision, honestly. It was a weirdo, sci-fi, fantasy, bizarro… thing that I really liked. It’s a low-budget film and that is definitely evident, but it plays to the film’s advantage. It’s out there and it’s something totally different. More Primer than Alien, but more culty than Primer. It was a pleasant surprise that kept me on my toes constantly and I had to Google what I had watched afterwards, which I get a sick sort of high from because it’s so “out there” that my little brain can’t quite comprehend it.

7. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007)

p01gr682

Okay, now let’s jump back a decade to a film that has been on my ‘list,’ my ‘official’ list, for probably that same amount of time. A French film originally entitled Le scaphandre et le papillon, I entered into this tunnel with only the knowledge that it had something to do with a quadriplegic man. It was so aesthetically interesting and the story was revealed in such an interesting, multiphasic way that piqued my interest.

6. BlacKkKlansman (2018)

Blackkklansman-Movie-Photo-Adam-Driver

BlacKkKlansman was a disturbingly eye-opening look at black vs white race relations in the United States that applies even still today. It jumps all around the emotional spectrum – comedy, tension, ending on the unfortunately realistic note of ‘nothing has changed.’ It challenges current society, triggers feelings of anger and hopelessness, and it couldn’t have come at a more appropriate time.

5. Loving Vincent (2017)

Loving-Vincent-2017

Loving Vincent was easily the most beautifully done film I’ve ever seen. I’ve always been a Van Gogh fan, so when I saw the teaser trailer for this one, I knew I’d see it and love it. I went in with high expectations that were not at all disappointed. It’s entirely animated using rotoscoping (think Waking Life crossed with Starry Night, which was obviously the intention). I thought the story was wonderfully written and I loved seeing familiar faces all… art-y. Would definitely recommend!

4. A Quiet Place (2018)

https3A2F2Fblueprint-api-production.s3.amazonaws.com2Fuploads2Fcard2Fimage2F7493322Fe137dee6-8fa8-472d-8530-4ba865ea2bc0

A Quiet Place is a film I loved so much that I paid full price for the Blu-ray for my collection. You heard that right. I paid full price. It was so well-shot, well-written, and the concept was original (yeah, yeah, Bird Box, blah blah blah, whatever – A Quiet Place was so far superior, there was no contest). It created an environment where you cared about each and every character, even though they were dumb enough to have a baby in this weird post-apocalyptic environment where you can’t make a sound… it’s fine Emily & John, I still love you, but damn… that was not an intelligent decision. This film physically pained me at the end, but I would watch it again and again and I will until the day I die because it was so good. I hope Jim Halpert, er… John Krasinski never stops directing.

3. A Star is Born (2018)

a-star-is-born-bradley-cooper-lady-gaga-slice-600x200

I love this movie so much that I hate it. I don’t know that it’s the best movie on this list or that it’s not without it’s own universe of flaws, but there is something about the way it tells its story that sucks me in and I can’t stay away from that soundtrack. Bradley Cooper did an excellent job with this one and Barbra Streisand is probably rolling in her grave* with how much BETTER it is than the 1976 version. So much raw emotion, and the dog, guys, the DOG!

*Yes, I know that Barbra Streisand is still alive.

2. I, Tonya (2017)

11-_tonya_harding_margot_robbie_at_the_1994_olympics_in_i_tonya_courtesy_of_neon_and_30west-h_2017

I already reviewed this one and I do not care. I loved I, Tonya, I thought Margot Robbie’s portrayal of Tonya Harding was exceptional, I loved everything about Allison Janney, as always. This movie is a joy and a blessing.

1. Coco (2017)

coco59c2b7f63158e_-_h_2017

Coco is the best thing Disney has done in a long time. It is enjoyable for everyone – young and old (except maybe my dog because man, he hates Dante the alebrije). I absolutely love this movie. I’ve watched it at least 5 times since I saw it for the first time this year (though, to be fair, I didn’t pay full price for it) and it only gets better the more you watch it. Pixar usually has a ‘thing’ they focus on with each movie – with Brave, it was Merida’s hair and with Coco, it was lighting. The things they did with lighting were downright amazing.

Runner ups:

Eighth Grade (2018) – so painfully and realistically awkward, I felt guilty enjoying it.

Crazy Rich Asians (2018) – that wedding scene – incredible.

Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) – Rami Malek makes you fall in love with Freddie Mercury all over again.

To All the Boy I’ve Loved Before (2018) – the cutest movie I saw all year.

6 Balloons (2018) – heartwrenching.

Okay, that was WAY harder than I thought it was going to be. To be fair, I also used Google and looked at a quick overview of what notable movies came out that year, so I’m entirely certain that I missed a ton of really great films! I have such a decision-making problem and I just love films so much. There aren’t many that I watch and go “that’s a bad movie.” And since I was born in ’92, I miss out on listing some of the greatest films, some of my FAVOURITE films… I really wanted to list Carrie but it’s from 1976… darn. Anyway, it was a fun little exercise in rattling off movies that I love and it gives you a sense of what films I enjoy, too! (P.S. Good thing there’s no tag limit, apparently!)

2016: A Year in Film

29/12/2016 · by Joy

2016 is almost behind us and I really didn’t watch (or review) as many movies as I wanted to this year. I mean, I can really only look back to about March and you know, my memory only goes back so far. I can’t rely on my brain, that’s just ridiculous!

So in honour of ringing in the new year (which hasn’t happened yet, but whatever, just go with it), I wanted to do a little recap post as my (probably) last post of 2016.

The Best Movie I Saw in the Year 2016 (That Was Also Made in 2016)

arrival
swiss-army-man-_02_3681_rgb-e1467313839148

I’m really really torn. It’s a very close call between Arrival and Swiss Army Man. Neither are a flawless film, but both really affected me and I really, truly enjoyed them!

The Worst Movie I Saw in the Year 2016

thegallows

Hands down, The Gallows takes the cake. It was so bad, so beyond bad that it was almost mediocre but actually it wasn’t, it was just the worst. The worst. I will not ever watch this movie again. Ever. Not even once.

The One I Couldn’t Believe I’d Never Seen Before 2016

5012_5

I am almost ashamed to admit it took me 20 years to see The Frighteners for the first time. I had really dropped the ball for, like, 2 decades by not seeing it sooner. I’d never even HEARD of it. But this will definitely be a Halloween season classic from now on, thanks to Rhiannon and Mel who played it and introduced me to the wonderfulness that is Michael J. Fox’s adventures in the after life(?)

The Best Movie You Probably Haven’t Heard Of or Seen from 2016 That I Saw and Really Liked

tallulah

Tallulah was a super pleasant surprise. I love Ellen Page, so I wasn’t expecting a garbage film or anything, it was just a movie I saw and watched on a whim without reading reviews (which doesn’t really happen too often). I can’t say I’ve ever seen a BAD Netflix original, but this was a really underrated (well, not really, it has 84% on RottenTomatoes) and really unmentioned film worth watching!

The Best New TV Series From 2016

stranger-things

Stranger Things – season 1 was absolutely fantastic. I am waiting what feels like endlessly for season 2. It feels like it’s never going to come! I can’t wait for the young stars of this hit new show to return and show us what they can do… they’ve made a fan out of me!

The Best Older TV Series I Fell in Love With in 2016

batesbar2

A show I hadn’t seen before this year (even though it premiered in 2013 and I’m obsessed with Norman Bates… I even have a betta fish – bate-a fish if you will – named Norman Bates) was Bates Motel and I’m SO sorry I hadn’t seen it before this year. It was so good! I can’t wait to watch season 4, hopefully in 2017!

The Weirdest Movie I Saw in 2016

the-housemaid-korea-2010-dvdrip-xvid-ac3-avi_snapshot_01-42-28_5b2010-09-18_05-28-225d

The Housemaid was a super bizarre South Korean film I watched on Netflix this year. I am usually a pretty big fan of every Korean film I watch, especially Oldboy, Memories of Murder, A Tale of Two Sisters, and I Saw the Devil… they really do thrillers well there! They have that genre down… however, I did watch (half of) one just the other night – The Wailing – which I was less a fan of, but alas, another review for another time. The Housemaid was explicit, not what I expected, and had a super weird ending, but I enjoyed it a lot.

Honourable Mentions from 2016

In 2016, I didn’t see or review as many movies as I’d hoped I would… but some of the films I saw that made their way into my heart include The Den, local creation Sleeping Giant, the horribly underrated As Above, So Below, Andy Samberg’s satirical Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, a wonderful horror that surprised me in how good it actually was in Don’t Breathe, and another that I couldn’t believe I hadn’t seen before, The Loved Ones. All of these (I hope) will be making their way into my Bluray collection. I already own Don’t Breathe as I picked it up at a local pawn shop on Boxing Day for $7! AND HEY, I have a birthday coming up ;)

I can’t wait for the films I will see in 2017! There are tons coming out which I am SO excited for… Split, A Dog’s Purpose, Rings, Beauty and the Beast, The Autopsy of Jane Doe, IT, Pitch Perfect 3… should be a good year in the film universe!

October Movie Marathon 2016!

05/07/2016 · by Joy

So every year since 2011, my boyfriend (David) and I have created a roster of films for the month of October and tried our very best to watch a different horror (or even horror-ish) film every day of the month. Usually, we open our couch up to anyone who wants to join us (well, from our group of friends) and if they come, they come and if not, oh well – their loss! We have in the past called it Nanasween (it’s a stupid name, we know) as our cat’s name is Sylvanas, shortened usually to Nanas, and the name just stuck.

This year is absolutely no exception and our roster is fully complete as of now so I’m going to post it here. Hopefully, I’ll try to follow along on this blog with the films we are watching and with our success, or lack thereof.

We’re really excited this year and we tried to base most of the films in the 2000s or newer because in the past we’ve done the same older films (which there’s obviously nothing wrong with that – there are more classics to choose from that way!) I tried really hard to include films we haven’t watched excessively in the past 5 years and even to include films that neither of us have seen.

Here we go again…

13/03/2016 · by Joy

So I had almost 100 posts on this website about various movies, good and bad, but I really felt like it wasn’t what I wanted it to be. After almost 5 years, I am revamping my website – more like recreating, really, than revamping, actually.

I don’t have a ton of time to sit and actually write movie reviews, but when I do, I genuinely enjoy doing it! So I really want to start again and give it another shot… a better shot, too.

So hopefully I’ll be able to actually, you know, review some actual movies now and then and actually create some content. I’m thinking of maybe updating each week once a week. That way I have a schedule to adhere to so it won’t be lost in the wayside of my life and then I have some accountability. I can’t just come back and see that the last time I posted was 4 months ago!

So… here we go again: action!
